The Children

Hello everyone. I am just back from the opening of the orphanage in Myanmar. As many of you know the Catholic parish of Crowthorne and Sandhurst has for the last two years been collecting money so that an Orphanage could be built on the outskirts of Yangon. This month on the third of February, I had the great privileged of being at the opening of this home. The name of the orphanage is the Home of the Immaculate Conception.

It was a great occasion not for what we had achieved as a parish but because of the happiness of the children whose home it will be, until they are older enough to go out into the world and fend for themselves. The age range of the children is from 5-15. 17 girls and 1 boy. The reason why there is only one boy is that girls are considered expendable and do not have the same value placed on them. The sisters who look after them have no such concept and see every child as a child of God therefore each child no matter what gender is precious and needs the same love and attention.

The Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition do marvelous work in the name of the Lord. And they are dedicated to the works of charity and the education of those children who are from poor families especially from the rural areas of Myanmar. It may be of interest to know something of the conditions the majority of the people of Myanmar have to live in.
